Riverside Bistro - Review
Tiramipoo
Hotel restaurants have a reputation for being dogshit. While I’ll only consider eating at Fairmont, I feel like the other restaurants I’ve been to have just been abysmal in quality and service. Recently I dined at Riverside Bistro and much like other Mariott restaurants *cough* Braven, it was much too expensive for the quality they put on a plate.
Wasn’t feeling any of the appetizers and went straight to our main course. “Hudson Valle” Duck Leg Confit for $41 was my choice of the evening. This dish had harissa carrot puree, duck confit potatoes, peas, Grand Marnier gastrique and swiss chard. I didn’t hate this dish. I thought the duck was cooked well and the sweetness of the gastrique neutralized the bitterness of the swiss chard. The potatoes could’ve used a bit more flavor and the carrot puree needed to be more present, wish I had more if to eat. Overall it was a standard duck confit.
Now for dessert, I ordered the Deconstructed Tiramisu as recommended by the staff. Apparently this disgrace of a dessert was “the most popular” dessert on the menu. My gut had told me “no, don’t do this” while my eyes said “just get the pannacotta” I was torn. Foolishly ordered the tiramisu and regretted it as soon as I laid eyes on it. This had the visual charm of a D+ effort in a Grade 10 class of Home Ec. The mascarpone mousse was confined to this chocolate tulip with what appears to be a Nestle level of chocolate. They also decided to put some cherries on this plate to remind me that this is a black forest cake. Wth is going on here? The ladyfinger was not soaked in any espresso or liquer, It was placed ever so gently on top of the plate fresh out the biscuit package. It was hard AF and disgusting. I can picture the chef place the ladyfinger and whispering to himself, “the hoes gon love thisssss.” All of this is to be sprinkled with cocoa dust and a silhouette of a fork and spoon. This dish is an epitome of an eyeroll and needs to be taken off the menu and at $15 it’s a crime to serve. Safeway’s tiramisu at $20 seems like a tastier option.
The view ain’t saving Riverside Bistro from it’s subpar dishes.
