Hokkaido Uni

My sister promised me uni this week and then she screwed up and found out that Moonga Sashimi was not offering it this week. She dropped the ball. I’m extremely disappointed.

However, I’m reminded of the best uni I’ve ever had in my life. While experiencing major fomo from travelling anywhere at the moment, I always think of Hokkaido and all the tasty things I’ve eaten there. The restaurant we mosied over to while sightseeing had some alluring pictures of crabs and uni. The prices were dirt cheap. We had to go.

Upon entering this traditional Japanese restaurant, I can see all the seats are filled with many customers hiding away in their cubbies separated by shoji walls. Light had slowly filled into the restaurant through the frosted windows. The smell of cooked seafood filled the air. This was the first sitdown meal of our trip and it was delicious.

While the crab head was delicious (i’ll make another post about it later) the uni bowl was the main star. The smooth texture of the uni paired with the aromatics was perfect. Sitting next to it was juicy ikura where a fresh salty flavor awaited inside. The slices of sashimi as well sitting on top of the most perfect rice you could ever taste. It was great. It was 10 dollars. How is this possible?

I feel like there is a misconception with travelling to Japan to be expensive when in reality any dish you get here is just so damn good at any price range. When travelling restrictions are eased. Hokkaido may be the spot to visit once again.
