Travel Food Tuesday - Soul de Cuba
Cuban breakfast in Kelowna
Kelowna. I love it. It’s quiet, beautiful and offers the lifestyle of lake life with an easy-going vibe. It’s great stuff. We visit every year and I tell ya, we basically go to the same restaurants every year. One that really stands out is Soul de Cuba Cafe.
Last year we had this maybe 3 times. For breakfast, lunch and a snack before dinner. It’s incredibly simple yet delicious. Most of the time we gravitate to 3 main dishes. Cuban Style Benedict, Ropa Vieja, and their Cubano.
The Cuban Style Benny is your classic benny but with Ropa Vieja which is marinated shredded beef. The texture of the beef is so tender and the flavor is immaculate. It’s marinated with green bell peppers, onions, garlic and Caribbean seasoning. I don’t know what’s in that seasoning but it’s heaven.
Ropa Vieja is basically shredded beef with rice, tomato, and a helping of lettuce. It’s so simple and delicious. It’s served with a large bowl of black beans as well, delicious. Not heavy at all so you can probably order half a Cubano.
The Cubano here is the best I’ve ever had. Ham, Swiss cheese, roasted pork, lettuce, mustard, pickles, and mayo. Biking home with a bag full of these beauts is a great feeling. Everyone getting fed some delicious Cubanos.
This place can get busy but it’s still worthwhile to go. The only criticism is that the half Cubano, half benny. Etc. is pricy. It’s only $2 dollars less of the full dish and kind of a deterrent to even get the half and just order the full. Wish it weren’t so but that’s the restaurant business. Still though, Soul de Cuba is excellent, service is great, and the music videos they play on the TV will transport you to Cuba. You’ll be dancing in your seat.
