Frida Urban Taqueira - Review
These are the tacos we’ve been looking for
With new taco places opening up around Edmonton almost every month, I’m usually overwhelmed. Despite eating my weight in tacos weekly, I usually just go to the ones where I know i’ll have a good time. Because despite seeing the hot new taco truck or restaurant...i’m so disappointed most of the time.
So to my surprise that with zero expectation or research into Frida Urban Taqueira actually...is legitimately...delcious in all ways.
Upon entering Frida, you are transported to a very hip and vibrant Mexico City restaurant. It’s got color everywhere. The art of Frida Kahlo everywhere on the walls is just a vibe. The bathrooms as well is perfectly decorated. It’s a total experience here and it honestly just makes you happy to be there.
Now let’s get to the food, it’s absolutely top tier. We ordered the pescado, al pastor, suadero and carne asada tacos. Personally i’m torn. In Edmonton it seems like we just have to accept that no one will make a good al pastor off of a spit. It will always just be marinated and cooked in a pan. It kinda sucks but that’s just taco life now in Edmonton. I hope it will change...but in the meantime these al pastors will do. The pescado is lightly battered and fried, it’s delicious as well and the texture of it was so light. It’s also red snapper and after going to Costa Rica i’m convinced red snapper is one of the best fish fried ever. Ever in the world. It’s so goddamn delicious. And when you add that lime to this fish taco...damn, just damn probably the best in town. The main treat here though is the suadero. Tender beef confit brisket with fresh salsa verde. It’s simple, it’s fatty, it’s juicy and tasty. Just wow, inject this suadero into my veins pls ty. The star of the show though it this fucking tortilla, like it’s thick yet so fresh and as soon as you bite into it you know someone made it fresh just minutes before. It’s a level of quality i’d expect in a California taco.
I had also ordered the Gordita which unlike it’s popular version at Taco Bell...it’s done properly here. The Gordita is a fried tortilla stuffed with cheese, and this one had pork carnitas and salsa verde and lettuce. Now initially off the first bite, it kinda sucked. I hate lettuce, but after I got deep into that fried tortilla and hit that juicy carnita...damn i’m in heaven. I needed to wash it down with the best horchata I’ve had in the city. It’s truly great and feels….better than every other horchata in the city. Like only the best ingredients are allowed in the door here at Frida.
The one and only thing that might deter people from coming here is the price. Yes there is little value here. However, the food speaks volumes. These are the best tacos in Edmonton. It’s not the traditional type where you have 2 to 3 thin tortillas holding up your taco. This is the larger style ones and personally I think it is worth every penny. Each taco is about 5-6 dollars but when you bite into one you realize that money isn’t everything. Tacos are.
Sal says: Just Eat It (4.3/5)
Erik says: Everything was good except the fajita taco was pretty bland. Fish tacos and suadero was top tier. I would probably only recommend going on Tuesday, because their prices are about 25% too high imo. You can get similar quality at other places for cheaper
Sidestory incoming. When a few friends and I were in Mexico City. A couple of us wanted to go to the Frida Kahlo Museum. It looked super interesting and seemed like one of the best things to do. So when we asked the rest of the group if they were interested in the Frida Museum one of my friends asked “why do you want to go? is it because it’s free?”…………………………………………………….I honestly think about this once a week.
