The Bro’ Kin Yolk- Review

Pilipino Ferpection

I first heard of The Bro’Kin Yolk in Calgary but never had the chance to go. Seeing how OEB wasn’t in Edmonton yet at the time, I’d always just go there instead of trying anything new.  Seeing how bro’kin is a Filipino breakfast spot, I also didn’t find the appeal for paying for something I know I can make at home. However, after trying bro’kin yolk for the first time a month ago, I can see why there are lineups out the door.

The brunch dishes here were pretty tasty. My order was the Bro’s Breakfast, which had pork belly adobo (fuckkk so good), two sunny side up eggs topped with salsa, and on top of jasmine rice. This is very nostalgic taste of growing up Filipino. Almost a Ratatouille moment, it was delicious and didn’t feel too heavy for a traditional brunch. However, since it wasn’t filling enough I got a side of waffle with white chocolate lavender sauce as well as the longanisa. The waffle was as expected, not super fluffy but crisp in texture. The sauce on it though was a chef’s kiss. The longanisa which is traditionally a sausage came out in a mutilated sausage kind of way. I wasn’t too happy about it but after looking at more recent photos...do they do sausage now?? Idk let’s say yes. My friend had got the Upstream Benny which had smoked salmon, pickled red onion, wilted spinach and basil hollandaise. Having a few bites, it was a solid benny that’s served on a waffle if that’s your thing.

The service here was pretty friendly and was pretty nice of the owner/manager to ask us how the food was. After telling them of the lack of spicy banana ketchup and tubed longnisa, she had seemed pretty receptive so hopefully, there were some changes. Regardless of my preferences, it’s probably the number one choice for brunch southside Edmonton and definitely worth a visit.

Sal says: Just Try It (3.9/5)

@a_villania says: I liked it but get real longanisa. (Don’t kno how to spell it)
